(rhetoric) An obvious and deliberate exaggeration, or, an exaggerated statement (or figure of speech) not to be taken literally.

"The class warfare rhetoric coming from the Left utilizes hyperbole in order to inflame passions. "

"Hyperbole is the best rhetorical device in the Universe." 

The word "hyperbole" comes to English from the Greek hyperbolḗ, meaning "excess, exaggeration, throwing beyond".
