Vicissitude

[vi-SIS-i-tood]

Today's word comes from the Latin vicissitudo ("in turn, in the place of"). It is a variation in circumstances or fortune at different times in your life, or in the development of something. It also refers to the mutability of life.

"The vicissitudes of human politics are a fascinating study."
